An iPhone Tourist In Kyoto

IMG_3186

Ah, Kyoto. The former feudal capital of Japan and home to 2000 temples and shrines, 17 of them UNESCO World Heritage listed. Yep, it’s a “must see” city in Asia … so, we just had to err, see it.

After zipping through the heavily industrialised countryside of Japan and gazing through the surprisingly small shinkansen (bullet train) windows, first impressions of this city were not good. I wish I had read the Lonely Planet entry for Kyoto before I arrived, because I was expecting a beautiful old place. Instead you are affronted with the typical beige and grey concrete blocks and crowded streetscape. However, when you get out of the city, and find the pockets where the famous temples are, and head to the foothills on each side of the city, then the true magic and hidden beauty of Kyoto becomes apparent. And the traditional feel of the city speaks to you. We even caught a glimpse of a couple of geisha nipping into a restaurant before the start of their night’s entertainment. A rare sight indeed. But sorry, they were so quick in avoiding any cameras that no-one on the street got a photo.

Here’s just a few photos from my iPhone from two days in Kyoto. I took my new Canon 1D Mark IV around with me, but you know what, due to the ease of iPhone-ography, I haven’t even uploaded the shots onto my computer yet to look at them.

But sometime soon I will post some entries with my “proper” photos, and the slide film panoramas from my new Horizon Pefekt camera.

An iPhone Tourist In Tokyo

As I said back in this post, iPhones make it easy nowadays. I downloaded the WordPress app, so we’ll see how this goes posting directly from my phone.

Here’s some iPhone-only photos for my three days in Tokyo. (Well, it looks like it’s a little hard to insert a gallery so this selection below will have to do.)

Torstein Horgmo’s Triple Cork X-Games Perfect Score

You know how I said Torstein Horgmo is the boss of all bosses? Well he proved it at X-Games over the weekend.

But first watch this clip that Torstein posted on his blog not long before X-Games from a jumps session at Keystone. Backside 1440 Triple Cork … and then Switch Backside 1440 Triple Cork! What. The. Fuck.

The Keystone vid was a precursor to Torstein’s tricks at the X-Games Big Air final – he locked away a backside triple cork, then stomped the first switch backside triple cork landed in competition, scoring a perfect 50 out of 50 score.  But with one rider still left to drop, when good mate Mark McMorris slightly skidded the landing of his Cab 1440 Triple Cork, both the young Canadian and Norwegian were tied on a best two-scores of 94. On countback, Torstein took the Gold Medal for his perfect scoring last jump.

Beyond epic, don’t you think? Watch the guys chat about it here:

But McMorris didn’t rest on his silver-medalled laurels long, landing the first triple cork ever seen in snowboarding slopestyle competition on his way to X-Games Slope Gold the next day. Well done, sir!

Capo di tutti capi: Torstein Horgmo

Torstein Horgmo is the boss of all bosses. Need a reminder why? Triple cork in the Whistler backcountry should do it.

But most of all, how ’bout his effortless steeze and bomb-proof afterbang?

East Coast Surf Road Trip With Just An iPhone

Crescent Head beach panorama
Panorama taken with iPhone.

iPhones make it all too easy! In fact nowadays I hardly bother taking my pocket Canon digital camera with me, let alone my new Canon EOS 1D mark IV. So I thought I’d try posting a blog directly from my iPhone with photos from a recent roadtrip from Melbourne to the Gold Coast and edited using just the phone’s auto-enhance & panorama function as well as Instagram, Luminance and Pic Jointer apps.

And the result. Well, WordPress ain’t the easiest beast to tame on a 3 inch touch screen – I couldn’t work out how to change the order of the gallery photos, or caption them. So I think I’ll stick to computer blogging from now on…
